Financial philately is the discipline and practice of investing in rare classic postage stamps as an alternative asset class. It has recently started to be viewed as a new and emerging asset class amongst unconventional investors. Financial philately is based on diversity from today’s traditional investment instruments. Although discouraged by the philatelic industry, it is slowly gaining some momentum in the investment world, where high net-worth individuals with large appetites seek to diversify their portfolio of empowering products by betting on non-conventional assets as means of hedging themselves from any traditional risks. By locking into a long-term speculative product that can be categorised as a unique instrument, this hopes to help mitigate any immediate possible risks which may precipitate from the present-day market forces that dictate most traditional assets.
