FilePile.com was a Web site created in the mid-1990s as a Web interface to the ExecPC BBS system. Although popular, the site shut down in 1999.
FilePile.com hosted and provided access to over 1.2 million files, claiming to be "the world's largest indexed collection of shareware" for Windows, Macintosh, MS-DOS, and Unix. The site was sometimes mentioned in the same breath as CNET's Download.com, and as of 2005 nearly 1000 Web sites continued to link to it. FilePile.com contained typical 1990s BBS fare, including games, utilities, clip art, screensavers, and drivers.
Although FilePile.com was popular and used a T-3 connection, it was restricted by its BBS roots. Files could not be uploaded to the service via the Web interface, only through the ExecPC BBS. Filepile.com was shut down on August 30, 1999. The BBS system can still be accessed by telnetting to bbs.execpc.com.
