Fear fetishism is a sexual fetish where an individual becomes aroused when frightened. A mild form of masochism, it generally involves little or no physical abuse. Rather, the "abuse" is pychological and may be passive or active. The passive fetishist may, for example, watch a scary movie or television show to "get their blood up". This may or may not be accompanied by simultaneous masturbation. An active fetishist may engage in outrageous "thrill-seeker" behavior, such as driving fast or sky diving, in order to raise their adrenaline levels to their peak. This behavior is generally not dangerous unless a fetishist is attracted towards a partner who employs overt aggressive or masochistic action like striking, whipping, tying up, cuffing, or otherwise harming the person to frighten them. The phenomenon seems fairly rare, though perhaps it is simply not often spoken of. More fear fetishists seems to be women than men.
In Popular Culture *Roxy Rocket, a female character in Batman:The Animated Series, lives a wild lifestyle, stealing from her victims in audacious ways. She bores fast and continually seeks new challenges. When being apprehended by Batman and plummeting to seeming death, her face contorts in an expression of bliss that some viewers say appears to be the harbinger of an impending orgasm. *On an episode of Family Guy ("Breaking Out Is Hard to Do"), Lois Griffin starts stealing objects, and finds she actually becomes physically aroused by the prospect of being caught. The thefts get progressively more bold, the gratification greater, and the objects pricier. Soon her theft of a very expensive Matisse painting catches Officer Joe Swanson's eye, and he arrests her.
