Father Stalin look at this is a Ukrainian children's Nursery Rhyme from the early 1930's which was written to describe the events of the Holodomor and rule under the Soviet Union. The rhyme was most recently published in Bloodlands: Europe Between Stalin and Hitler by Timothy Snyder. Meanings The first line "Father Stalin" refers to Joseph Stalin leader of the soviet union at the time of the Holodomor. The second line introduces the theme of Collective Farms which the Ukrainian peasants were being forced onto at the time. The third line about run down homes and farm buildings refers to the general state of dilapidation which pervaded the country as the starving had no strength to repair their properties. The fourth line "Broken Nags" refers to the peoples inability to feed their own livestock, as all their grain had been taken by the state.
