Fangsmiths almost always have extensive training as dental assistants or dental technicians and apply their craft in a different way special effects artists in that they primarily specialize in fangsmithing exclusively. Fangs are often hand carved, do not need adhesives and are based upon film or literature which customers relate too in modern fiction and literature. Several notable example of the fangsmithing craft include Father Sebastiaan, the fang artist and music composer Dnash, Maven of New Orleans and Ali of New York City. The first generation of what would become known as fangsmiths started in the 1980s with Tsarvek of Seattle and Greggor of Strangeblades. The term fangsmith was coined by the Fangsmith Mavenlore who is affiliated with The Sanguinarium movement, which is a subset of the vampire subculture.
