Fandom Wank is a blog-based online community located on the LiveJournal clone JournalFen. Content The site describes itself as a locus for discussion of flamewars, egotism, and dramatic feuds within fandom, primarily media fandom, anime and manga fandom, and science fiction fandom but occasionally also including other fandoms such as popular music fandoms. The portion of fandom hosted by LiveJournal is a particularly frequent target of these discussions, and many Fandom Wank participants are also active on LiveJournal. History Fandom Wank was founded in 2002, and existed on several other servers prior to its 2003 move to JournalFen, including LiveJournal, Blurty, , and CrazyLife. The community's name comes from the British English slang term "wank", referring to masturbation. describes Fandom Wank as "perhaps most notable" among several sites devoted to introspection in the fandom community, and writes that "Fandom Wank and its posts are a prime example of the social sanctions that members of a community can use to enforce norms." In contrast to this view of the site as an enforcement mechanism, views Fandom Wank as an archive of the history of fandom; she writes that "the work posted at Fandom Wank illustrates contemporary activities of historiography and documentation on the Web within a specific community, foregrounding notions of authority and meaning making."
