Facing the Wishes is an artist book containing the faces and wishes of the children of Brenner primary school, Tel Aviv, Israel. Elyasaf Kowner met each of the children in person, talked to them and took their direct portraits while making the wish. All 218 portraits appear in black and white and they each cover a full page in the book. The wish of each child is added as told. Kowner constructs the process of closeness between him and the children as he speaks to them about their wish. Soon after that, he photographs them with his lens close to their faces, their gaze direct, and their eyes speaking from their depths. The book was published by Pardes Publishing House and is a part of the Karov project aiming at a close dialogue between an artist and the community. The project is curated by Idit Porat and funded by the Department of the Arts, the Municipality of Tel Aviv. The book was relased on February 18, 2007 and a copy of the book was given to each one of the children appearing in it. Memorable wishes * My wish is that the people living in the streets would find themselves homes. * That there would be no more wars. That everyone would be satisfied from what they have. * My wish is to fly to space. To reach Africa and see the animals. * To be strong like the robot Optimus Prime. * My wish is that my mother would give birth quickly cause she is carrying a daughter in her belly. * I would like it to be the Holocaust Memorial Day once again cause it's great when the sirens blow and I love to be out traveling. * My wish is to have an electric scooter and a bicycle and that's it. * My wish is that mother would give birth easily and not have a stomach ache every minute. That all the family would be healthy and have livelihood and that's it. * To be like Ronaldinho who was poor in the beginning, continued to the league and made lots of money. Made it far, to Europe.
