An Evolutionary Ufology Hypothesis

The year 2009 marked 150 years of Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution by means of natural selection. In the last couple of decades evolutionary science has begun to enter into nearly every aspect of biological inquiry, including the fledgling disciplines of evolutionary medicine and evolutionary psychology. I would like to add another discipline, one that examines ufology from an evolutionary perspective, namely “evolutionary ufology”.
Evolutionary ufology should not be confused with paleoufology, which studies ancient evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence (ETI) on Earth. The underlying hypothesis of evolutionary ufology is that there are no humanoid ETIs on our planet now, nor were there any in the past. Rather, what ufologists have understandably accepted as humanoid ETIs are instead, perhaps, another species of human that has evolved alongside modern humans for at least the last fifty thousand years.
The existence of the humanoid “Grays”, in particular, gives credence to this hypothesis. The nature of evolution, as firm as any other natural law, denies the probability (not the possibility) that a humanoid creature could have evolved anywhere but here. The odds of parallel evolution of humanoids on two separate worlds are astronomically unlikely. However, this hypothesis does not deny the possibility that we have been visited by ETIs, humanoid or otherwise.
So if the humanoid visitors who fly their craft in our skies, abduct us from our homes, and communicate with us psychically are not from outer space, where are they from?
As an instructor of human evolution locked in the “True Believer” (Hopkins 2010:7) academic science atmosphere, I was unable to ask these questions with an open mind until I was unemployed due to budget cuts in this recession. Three of my closest friends witnessed a triangular UFO flying low past their house (see Rowell and Bowden 2008). My daughter saw a large red rectangular UFO from her bedroom window in the summer of 2009. My father and his grandfather watched two blue UFOs streak impossibly fast across the sky from one end of the horizon to the other in 1957. Though I myself have never seen a UFO I fully reject C.G. Jung’s insulting and absurd explanations of the “flying saucer” phenomenon. My friends and family were not hallucinating or experiencing “collective visions” (Jung 1978:18). These objects were real.
Before I continue with the evolutionary ufology hypothesis, a brief review of “recent” human evolution is necessary for analogy. Thirty-five thousand years ago Homo sapiens shared the planet with at least two other species of human, Homo neanderthalensis (the Neanderthals) and Homo floresiensis (the so-called “Hobbits”). The Neanderthals went extinct due to extreme resource competition with our species around thirty-five thousand years ago, and the “Hobbits” apparently went extinct twelve thousand years ago due to a massive volcanic eruption on their Indonesian island of Flores. These extinction events, supposedly, left us the last human standing. Enter the “Grays”.
The anatomy of Grays commonly depicted suggests a subterranean species of human, herein referred to as Homo troglodytes (“cave-dwelling human”). Their integument is lacking in pigment and they have exceptionally large eyes (both adaptations to reduced sunlight). Following the explosion of Mt. Toba seventy-four thousand years ago, ancestors of Homo troglodytes were pushed into a cave-dwelling niche due to extreme competitive exclusion during the instant ice age that lasted for approximately one thousand years; Ethiopia is a probable location for their initial “spelunking”. To survive in a subterranean environment required unparalleled cooperation and intelligence. Once again, their anatomy confirms this hypothesis: enlarged cranium (facilitating expansion of the frontal lobe) and reduced prognathism. The absence of a chin is consistent with the mouth having no digestive properties (Corso 1997:106). The overall anatomy of Homo troglodytes, including a vastly reduced post-cranial skeleton, exhibits neoteny (the retention of juvenile traits into sexual adulthood) which physically facilitates all of the anatomical (and behavioral) features described.
The technology of Homo troglodytes, specifically the recovered Roswell craft as described by William Louis McDonald and Frank Kaufman, suggests cultural adaptation to undersea environments. The resemblance of the Roswell craft to a manta ray (Glenday 1999:41) may not be at all specious. Underground to underwater dwelling seems a natural evolutionary progression, and the planet’s oceans would have been a niche conveniently unoccupied by other humanoids. The advancement from submarine to aircraft and spacecraft also seems a logical technological progression.
The recently recorded behavior of Homo troglodytes suggests a species that considers us humans as inferior and disposable, much as our species must have considered the Neanderthals. Nuclear tests and destruction of the environment, specifically the death of our oceans, has increased their interest in us within the last century. Their anthropologists abduct us and probe us, their pilots threaten our airspace, and their ecologists warn us of the impending environmental breakdown caused by our comparatively primitive and destructive technologies.
If the above presented hypothesis and accompanying speculations are of any value to the ufology community then I have made some very small success. As with any scientific hypothesis, the affirmations must be capable of confirmation or denial; every other assertion is speculation. I do not intend to deny the assertions of others better versed in ufology than I.
