Evelyn Rachel Taft (born August 24, 1984) is a meteorologist, weather anchor, journalist, and news editor and director. She is currently chief weeknight meteorologist for the KCAL-TV channel 9 station in Los Angeles. Early life Taft is Jewish, and was born in the San Francisco Bay Area to Moscow-born parents. She grew up speaking only Russian at first, followed by English (which she learned partially by watching The Weather Channel), Hebrew, and French. She also spent portions of her formative years living in London, southern France, and Israel. After graduating high school from the Menlo School in Atherton, California,she moved to Los Angeles, and attended the Annenberg School of Journalism at the University of Southern California. It was there that she discovered her passion for meteorology. She forecasted the weather for Annenberg’s life newscast, while she earned both her Broadcast Journalism and Political Science degrees. Career When she was just fourteen years old, Taft started working at the Bay Area’s Midpeninsula Community Media Center, a media production company with community-access cable channels. By age sixteen she was hosting her own show on travel and entertainment. Upon graduation from USC in 2006, Taft joined the news team at KCOY-TV, the CBS affiliate in Santa Maria on the central California coast, where she worked not only as weather anchor, but also as news anchor and reporter. She spent a significant amount of time reporting from the front lines of several Santa Barbara County wildfires. Her series “Military Minute,” which profiled area soldiers who had served in Pearl Harbor, Vietnam, and Iraq, won an appreciation award from the Army National Guard. During this time, she also forecasted weather at KION-TV, the CBS affiliate in Salinas, California. She remained at KCOY until 2008. From 2007 to 2010, Taft attended Mississippi State University where she earned her certificate in meteorology. From 2008 to 2010, Taft worked at the independently operated KRON-TV channel 4 station in San Francisco, where she forecasted the weather for their seven hour morning show. In July 2010, she relocated to Los Angeles and joined the crew at KCAL9/CBS2 in Studio City, where she has worked ever since. Personal life From an early age, Taft has had in interest in international culture and travel. She has trekked through Europe, Asia, Central America, and South America where she climbed Machu Picchu. In her spare time, Taft enjoys sailing, adventurous eating, reading, and spending time with her family and pug dog Rocco. As of June 3, 2011, she is engaged.
