Carson was shot early in the morning of March 5, 2008 in Chapel Hill.

Biography
Carson grew up in Athens, Georgia, the daughter of Bob Carson and Teresa Bethke. Her younger brother Andrew Carson is a junior at Davidson College. Carson attended Clarke Central High School in Athens, where she was elected president of the high school's student body and was valedictorian. She also studied abroad in Cuba, and participated in summer programs in Ecuador, Egypt and Ghana.

Death and memorial
Carson's body was found at the intersection of Hillcrest Circle and Hillcrest Drive in Chapel Hill at approximately 5:00 a.m. on March 5. They could not immediately identify the body, but at 9:00 a.m. on March 6, police investigators and the office of the medical examiner identified the body as Carson's. Chapel Hill Police Chief Brian Curran said that Carson's death appeared to be a random act, and police have no evidence other than her car, which was found more than a mile away from her body, after police received a tip from a local witness who spotted Carson's car. The medical examiner said that Carson had not been sexually assaulted.

UNC's Chancellor James Moeser spoke to the student body on Polk Place at 3:00 p.m., and at 7:00 p.m. students organized a candle-lit vigil in the Pit, which included singing by three student a cappella groups and a slideshow of photos of Carson.
