Eugene Backwoods

The Eugene Backwoods are the forests directly to the south (and in some cases, within the city limits) of Eugene, Oregon.

This area includes Spencer Butte and the temperate rain forests around it, the headwaters of Amazon Creek, and the area between South Eugene and Lane Community College.

Geography

Aside from a clearing to make way for a power line, and a few roads and houses, this forest is almost continuous.
Part of it is incorporated into a city park of Eugene, but the area near Amazon Creek (called the "Amazon Headwaters Forest") is privately owned, and recently was saved by environmentalists from development into a neighborhood.

Overall the forest covers about 2,000 acres, with the trees mostly being Douglas-fir and oak. Besides Amazon Creek, there are several small streams in the forest. Deer and raccoons are common.
