On 26 August 2012, approximately six witnesses reported seeing a lioness in the town of St Osyth near Essex, England. After the police were informed by the witnesses of the cat a search was launched by Essex Police and zookeepers from Colchester Zoo. The search for the lioness took place throughout Sunday and Sunday evening until the search was called off on Monday morning. Police reaction After sightings were reported to the police, areas where the cat was sighted were closed to the public and news networks told people to stay indoors if they lived near places were the cat was sighted. Not long after news of the sightings spread, hoax pictures appeared on the internet and several Twitter pages were created.
