Erasmus debating society

The Erasmus Debating Society (EDS) is an independent Rotterdam-based debating society. The society roughly has 120 members.
History
The Erasmus Debating Society was founded in 1989 and was from its early conception always a big advocate of debate, both in the Netherlands as well as abroad. The largest group of EDS members are students of the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Since its foundation, the Erasmus Debating has hosted DAPDI, a yearly recurring debate training week inviting trainers from Oxford (previously Princeton), that over the course of twenty years has been visited by hundreds of people. In 1999, the society revitalized the European Universities Debating Championships, a major tournament that had not been organised since 1992. Since then, the Erasmus Debating Society has been actively spreading debate throughout the country, and was involved in setting up the Utrecht Debating Society and ASDV Bonaparte (Amsterdam). The Erasmus Debating Society conducts its activities primarily in English, although it also hosts Dutch debates. Roughly one third of all members are foreign students.
Activities
The Erasmus Debating Society has its weekly debate evenings on Mondays, when the debaters practice their skills. On the Monday evenings, the society regularly organizes workshops and social activities. Finally, the Erasmus Debating Society gives trainings and workshops to business life and high schools as well.
Members of the Erasmus Debating Society compete in debating tournaments all around the world, from Oxford to Singapore. The EDS also has a longstanding tradition of hosting their own tournaments. Apart from having hosted the 1999 European Universities Debating Championships, they have hosted the Dutch National Championships five times since 1997. In 2004, EDS hosted the Rotterdam Open, an international debating tournament that attracted participants the world over. After the Rotterdam Open, the Leiden Debating Union and ADSV Bonaparte would go on to host international tournaments as well.
