Earth Loop Recall

Earth Loop Recall were an alternative rock/post-punk band from London, UK

History

ELR Mk 1

Earth Loop Recall was originally formed by Ben McLees (guitar, lead vocals) and Mark Waterhouse (guitar, backing vocals). They played their first live shows in 2001, self-releasing a couple of EPs, before signing a one-album deal with Wasp Factory Recordings. During this time, they recruited two additional members - Joanna Quail (keyboards, cello, backing vocals) and Gareth Small (programming, backing vocals).

Their debut album 'Compulsion' was issued in 2004. The album was critically very well received, and the band continued to play throughout 2004, before announcing a break from live work so that the band could concentrate on writing and recording new material, as well as a growing number of side-projects. Ben McLees left the line up early in 2005, with the band effectively splitting as a result, with the free-download 'Futureless EP' the final release from this line-up.

Interim

After the initial split, Ben and Joanna concentrated on their work on the instrumental project SonVer. Ben also joined a number of other bands for short periods, including playing guitar for D.U.S.T., guitar for The Storm Society and bass for I Am Immune. He also recorded a solo EP entitled 'This Is Radio Silence' - the songs on the EP were later inducted into the ELR canon.

Mark Waterhouse and Gareth Small have since concentrated on their project Mordachi.

ELR Reforms

Earth Loop Recall later reformed with a new line up, featuring Ben McLees and Jo Quail (now on bass guitar), joined by Tim Clark from I Am Immune on guitar and backing vocals and Dan Vickers on drums (the earlier incarnation of the band utilised programmed loops instead of a live drummer). This line-up played it's first show in March 2007. Jo returned to live keyboards when Jason Knight joined the line-up as live bassist.

This line-up of the band released one single (The Bitter Begin) on Line Out Records. A album entitled 'This Means Nothing To You' was mooted, but this line-up of ELR split suddenly in February 2008, with the new recordings shelved indefinitely.
