Dystopia (book)

Dystopia: How the Tyranny of Specialists Fragment African cities is a 2020 polemic book by the City planner Archimedes Muzenda and published by the African Urban Institute arguing that specialist approaches to urban development in Africa as in across the world are fragmenting cities by that turning them into dystopia. He argues that the best way to create liveable cities is to adopt generalist approach or rationalise specialist approach through regulation.
Synopsis
The book's 9 chapters are categories by each group of specialists discussed. The Overture of the book sets the stage for the book's discussion by characterising various groups of specialists and how the specialist approach differ from the generalist approach. The other 7 chapters discuss each group of specialist one by one from town planning regulators, urban studies scholars, traffic engineers, architects, environmentalists, and right to the city proponents. The book concludes with a chapter on how to rationalise all the specialists discussed towards a generalist approach and creating more liveable cities.
