Elections were on August 26, 2014. Miyar ran on the notion that Miami-Dade County Public Schools needed education reform, especially tohelp students succeed in the state mandated tests known in Florida as the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). Another idea in her campaign was to bring alertness to the changes needed to compete with other districts in the US, such as New York City Department of Education, Los Angeles Unified School District and Chicago Public Schools. Miyar lost the election with only 18% of the vote to Hantman's 81%. Miyar said that she is a veteran English teacher who came to South Florida from Turkey. She said she wanted to bring an educator's perspective to the school board. "It's time for teachers to make a difference," she said. Miami-Dade County Public Schools is America's fourth-largest school system with a diverse enrollment of more than 340,000 students from over 100 countries.
