Drop-in Networking

Drop-in Networking is an industry term that defines the collaboration of a variety of wireless and wired communication networks in order to relay data between devices. Used in remote electronic applications such as sensors, controllers and automation devices, Drop-in Networking incorporates ZigBee/802.15.4 wireless mesh networking with gateways that relay data back to a central location.

Wireless gateways that support a variety of technologies, including ZigBee/802.15.4, Wi-Fi/802.11, cellular, Ethernet and serial connections, make it possible to create custom networks in remote locations where traditional wired networks are not feasible.

Originally introduced by Digi International in 2007, several companies in the industry have become Drop-in Networking Partners including AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and Freescale Semiconductor.
