Early life and education
Herbert was born on 12 June 1961 in Marion, Indiana. He grew up in the Midwest and was raised by a single mother. After graduating high school, Doug chose to enlist in the United States Army. He served for four years, a large period of which was spent in Germany. Upon returning to the United States, Doug attended night school while working in construction. He later transferred to Columbia University where he earned his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science in 1992. He also met his future wife, Marcy Wecker, a fellow student. After Columbia, Doug and Marcy attended Seton Hall Law School, both earning their law degrees.
Army service
Herbert served in the Army for four years. He was an infantryman with both the 2nd Armored Division and the 82nd Airborne Division. He received the Army Commendation Medal and the Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.
Electoral history
Herbert won the Democratic Primary for Congress in 2010 with 72% of the vote, receiving 6,192 votes. He received 15.9% of the vote in the 2009 New Jersey 26th Legislative District General Assembly General Election.
Personal life
Herbert and his wife Marcy have three children, and live in Chatham Borough, New Jersey. He volunteers as a coach in soccer, baseball and football.
