Doug Drexel

Doug Drexel (Douglas T. Drexel) born 1965 in San Diego, CA, is a Glaciologist from Juneau, Alaska. He earned his masters degree at the University of Alaska, Anchorage in Glaciology and Isostatic Rebound (1999). He has explored numerous Glaciers near his hometown of Juneau and has scaled the daunting Mendenhall Towers from the difficult western approach. He is also president of the Juneau Master Cabin Builders Association. He is a founding member of the Juneau C.W.A. and a champion kayaker, his greatest achievement finishing 8th in the 500m rapid challenge in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. He was the former owner of the Large Marge Barge Company in Juneau, Alaska before it was sold in 2009.
He is also known for finding the body of a missing British tourist that disappeared whist hiking on Mendenhall Glacier. He has appeared on National Geographic Channel, re-enacting the segment. Recently he has completed a comprehensive totem pole repair course in Ketchikan, Alaska and is only one of a handful of non-native Americans who has the qualifications to do so. He has appeared in 2 films to date "Gone to Alaska" (2007) and "Paddy Boy Slim",(2009). Both filmed and directed by aspiring Australian director Neale Vickery of Magoo Films International.
He is also known for a failed solo expedition to Mount Slacker in the Fairweather Range (2007) in which he lost 2 toes to frostbite. He managed to descend safely in the face of a winter blizzard and was rescued by the Alaska State Troopers a day later in a semi-delirious state.
His most recent achievement is a restoration of the House of Wickersham in Juneau, 2010.
