Donald I. Barker was born in 1953, in Sacramento, California. Barker has authored and/or coauthored twenty-nine tutorial-style software application textbooks. His contributions include the first textbooks on expert systems development aand how to display business data visually using Harvard Graphics.. He coauthored the first textbook on Microsoft Windows. . Barker established the practice of including student versions of application software and online instructor materials with textbooks, along with being the lead author of the original "how-to" textbook series covering application software for Microsoft Windows, such as electronic spreadsheets, word processors, and database management systems. He pioneered the "hybrid" college textbook, which integrated the durability and practicality of paper with the quickly updated nature of the Internet, as well as the coauthoring the first textbook on Netscape Navigator.
