The Bad Monkey is a popular electric guitar effects pedal manufactured by DigiTech. The pedal uses analog solid state electronics to emulate the sound of an overdriven tube amplifier, adding harmonic distortion that many guitar players find pleasing. The Bad Monkey will operate using either a standard 9-volt battery or an external DC adapter, and features built-in speaker cabinet emulation circuitry for connection directly to an audio mixing console, as well as a standard unbalanced 1/4 inch audio output for connection to a guitar amplifier. Knob controls include Level, Low, High and Gain. The high and low tone controls give the player the advantage of controlling the timbre of the output signal, either keeping it as close as possible to that of the incoming signal, or altering it at will. Many such effect units have only one 'tone control' knob, yielding much less control of the overall timbre. It can be set so that softly-picked notes and chords come through comparatively 'clean', and as the strings are plucked or strummed harder, the amount of signal 'breakup' increases proportionally, much as is the case with a tube amplifier.
