Denpasan Denpasan is a term in Japanese for a person who is disconnected from Japanese mainstream society. This can include the homeless or other people that don't fit into the usual stereotypical idea of a member of society for some other reason, but is not the only determining factor. It is somewhat similar to the term "drop out" in western culture, but places more emphasis on the idea that the person being labeled does not conform to the rules or norms of Japanese society. Hence, being homeless is not enough to qualify someone to be labeled a denpasan. There would need to be other behavior or aspects attributed to the person. Also, the person must either have chosen to opt out of conforming to societal norms or be incapable of doing so for some reason such as mental disorders, habits, addictions, or other behaviors. Again, excessive drinking or addiction alone does not qualify a person to be denpasan. Public drunkenness is tolerated in Japanese society in a different way and more readily than western society.
