Dennis Steele

Dennis P. Steele (born November 3, 1967 in Hartford, Connecticut) is a Vermont businessman and an independent candidate for Governor of Vermont in 2010. He is a Native American of the Abenaki tribe.
Background
Steele grew up in Kirby, Vermont and served in the United States Army for three years before college. He attended Cuesta College where he earned a A.S. in Mathematics and an AS in General Science. He then attended California Polytechnic State University, graduating in 2002 with a degree in Liberal Studies and a minor in Anthropology. He worked as a salesman in Hawaii and California. Steele started the website ChessManiac.com in 2003, and, in 2009, he founded the online radio station Radio Free Vermont which claims listeners in over 140 countries.
2010 gubernatorial election
On January 15, 2010, Steele announced his candidacy for Governor of Vermont in 2010 on the Second Vermont Republic-affiliated "Vermont Independence Day Party" ticket. Steele registered with the Vermont Secretary of State as an Independent.
In April 2010, Steele was arrested for interrupting a union-sponsored Democratic Party candidates debate that excluded him.
In a poll conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, Inc. of Washington, D.C. for the Vermont Public Radio VPR Vermonter Poll, from October 11 through October 13, 2010, a total of 625 registered Vermont voters were interviewed statewide by telephone and all indicated they were likely to vote in the November general election. Steele placed last among the seven listed gubernatorial candidates, with 1%+/- total of those polled.
On November 9, 2010, the Vermont Secretary of State's office certified results for the 2010 General Election held November 2. Of 241,605 votes cast for the office of governor, Steele received 1,917 or 0.79% of the vote.
Personal life
He lives in Kirby, Vermont with his family. He is married to Amber Steele and they have two children: Angela, and Luke.
