Death and state funeral of Islam Karimov

On September 2, 2016, Islam Karimov, the first president of Uzbekistan died at aged 78 from a stroke. His death came a day after Uzbekistan celebrated its independence from the Soviet Union.His death was announced on Uzbek State television at 20:55 UZT (15:55 UTC). He was given a state funeral and was buried in his home town of Samarkand.The chairman of the commission of organizing the funeral was Shavkat Mirziyoyev, who is speculated to be his successor. The funeral was attended by delegations from 17 countries, which included 3 heads of state, 6 heads of government and 8 various officials of countries such as Japan , Iran, and China.Eulogies were made by Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Andrei Kobyakov of Belarus, and Dmitry Medvedev of Russia.

Karimov's health being questioned in 2016 as there were rumours about his health.He was taken to the hospital on August 27 because he suffered from a stroke.His daughter Lola Karimova-Tillyaeva said he was in stable condition that day. Unconfirmed reports from the Ferghana Information Agency that represents the opposition said that had died that day, but that allegation turned out to be false.On September 2 it was announced that he was in "critical condition".His death was confirmed through diplomatic cables when the Turkish Prime Minister sent condolences to the Uzbek government.
Funeral Service
Karimov's body was flown from Tashkent to his home town of Samarkand on September 3, 2016.Along the streets of Tashkent people threw flowers and the procession.Karimov's coffin passed through Registan Square in Samarkand.Mourners carried the coffin through the square.
