David Walks-As-Bear, AA, AAS - Born: March, 9 1957 in Muskegon, Michigan - is a Native American Indian of the Shawnee Nation. He is an author, newspaper columnist, public speaker, detective and game warden.
He is listed in Native American Authors, National Society of Newspaper Columnists, The American Legion, The Military Writers Society of America and other organizations. He is a tribal elder of the Kispoko Warrior Sept. He is a noted speaker on Native American culture and spirituality, the US military and earthly oddities - ranging from the supernatural to UFOs. His books, writings and speaking engagements reveal his life experience as an American Indian, a retired Coast Guardsman, police officer, game warden, investigator, reporter and forest ranger. Biography
David Walks-As-Bear traces his ancestry to the woodland Indians of the Southern United States. He is a member of the "Sons of Confederate Veterans"having two great grandfathers who fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. His maternal great grandfather served with the 69th Alabama Infantry[http://www.gocoastguard.com/find-your-fit/reserve-opportunities/reserve-enlisted-opportunities/reserve-enlisted-ratings-descriptions/public-affairs-specialist-(pa)] and his paternal great grandfather fought with the 1st Cherokee Mounted Rifles - an all American Indian Confederate cavalry. Walks-As-Bear attended US Army R.O.T.C. at Western Michigan University and in 1983, he entered the US Coast Guard Reserve as a Direct Petty Officer. While in the Coast Guard, he served numerous periods of extended active duty, beginning with his assignment as a Port Security Unit combat boat crewman with the United States Rapid Deployment Forces in 1983.
He has received degrees ranging from Criminal Justice to Outdoor Recreational Management. He completed an intensive vocational carpentry school program and graduated from numerous military courses and the Michigan law enforcement certification police academy. Married in 1976, he and his wife have five children. He has worked as a deputy sheriff, a park ranger, a police officer, a newspaper reporter, a forest firefighter, and even as an armored car guard. When he began writing for civilian publications, he combined his Christian and Indian names to help keep the culture alive for his children. Any civilian literary work appears by "David Walks-As-Bear" and any military writing, appears with the byline of "Petty Officer Dave Davis, USCGR". In addition to writing freelance for varied periodicals, he was a part-time reporter for the Muskegon Chronicle - a Michigan metro newspaper - for six years. In 1992, he began writing a newspaper column for the White Lake Beacon newspaper, in Whitehall, Michigan. This affiliation has evolved into a weekly, syndicated column entitled The Bear’s Den. In 1994 he began the last leg of his law enforcement and security career via employment with the Environmental Wildland Patrol in Michigan. He presently works part-time as an investigator and patrol officer while spending more time writing. He also is a licensed private detective and security agent in the state of Michigan.
In 2002, his first Ely Stone novel The Murmurings was published to good reviews. This novel was followed by The L.P. (2004) and the second Ely Stone novel Old Money (2006). These were also well received. An ABC television series entitled Eli Stone (2008 to present) is based on Walks-As-Bear’s Ely Stone novels. As a result of the books, and his newspaper column, Walks-As-Bear began speaking before many groups and events. He was interviewed and appeared on an episode of the History Channel's "Monsterquest - The American Werewolf" in 2008. He routinely attends writer’s conferences in the U.S., and abroad, and appears on television and radio programs. He and his family live in Northwest Michigan and on the Big Island of Hawaii.
