Darren Friend

Career
Darren Friend 5th Dan Yoshinkan Aikido Instructor based in Sydney , Australia. He began aikido training in 1985 at Aikido Shudokan Melbourne Australia under Joe Thambu Sensei. In 1992 he travelled to Japan to undertake the famous Yoshinkan Aikido Senshusei Course and graduated the following year. Joining the staff at Yoshinkan Honbu (Headquarters) in 1994, Darren was made Chief Instructor - International Section of the Yoshinkan Honbu in 1996 and was directly responsible for administering the Senshusei course made famous in the autobiographical novel by Robert Twigger Angry White Pyjamas from 1996 to 2005. Darren Friend was involved in the publication of the Aikido Text "Total Aikido" and in 2004 he was the Aikido consultant for the Discovery Channel program Go Warrior.

In 2005 Darren Friend and his wife Peggy Woo left Tokyo and settled in Sydney, Australia where they established Aikido Yoshinkai NSW, the first full time Yoshinkan Aikido Dojo in Sydney. Darren Friend is the brother of Australian television journalist Rachel Friend.
