Military Career
Daniel Mumford was a captain in the British Special Air Service during World War II. He and his unit were dropped into Germany on August 29, 1942, where they sabotaged roughly 200 airplane factories in Germany. His efforts during World War II saved hundreds of lives. However, of his 16 man troop only 4 made it back to Britain alive. This was due to the fact that after about a year, the German Waffen S.S. assigned three units with the task of hunting down foreign Special Forces units. They were awarded bonuses and medals for killing SAS units, because they were the most effective Special Forces unit at the time. Mumford and his men were ambushed on the outskirts of Frankfurt. They were grossly out numbered and suffered four casualties immediately. 6 died later of mortal wounds, and 2 were taken as POW's. After the war, Mumford was awarded the British Victoria Cross, the highest Brtish military award, as well as the France and Germany Star.
