Daniel Ferch

Daniel Ferch is local Hero from Newbury Park California. Back in October of 2003 he courageously pursued an armed suspect of a nearby grocery store that was on strike at the time, due to employee pay discrepancies. A disturbed male suspect under the influence of a controlled substance was scouting the store walking down every isle. The suspect grabbed a clerk and at gun point took her to the back room and demanded money from the safe. He collected around 400 dollars and proceeded to run out of the store. The clerk ran to the front of the store sobbing and yelling he has a gun. Daniel Ferch was checking out as he casually went after the man without thinking of the consequences of what he might face. As he pursued the suspect down to the back ally behind the store, the armed man turned on Daniel and aimed his weapon at him. Daniel maneuvered his was around the aim of the gun as the confused and disturbed man ran towards Daniel and kept running past him. The suspect continued through the parking lot stripping his jacket and glasses to change his appearance. Right then the first K-9 unit of Thousand Oaks Sheriff Department pulled up with no lights on. Daniel waved the Sheriff down and pointed him towards the direction of the suspect. The sheriff found him hiding in a bush, he was then arrested at gunpoint. Daniel Ferch was later awarded, in January of 2004, the highest civilian medal anyone can receive "the Medal of Merit" at the Award Ceremony for the Ventura County Peace Office Association.
