Daniel Atkinson

Daniel Atkinson (born July 22 1982) is a reporter for the Newton TAB, where he covers legislative matters, police and fire departments and other stories of interest. He has previously worked for the Newburyport Daily News, The Daily Free Press, The Union Leader, The Bangor Daily News, The Columbus Dispatch. He was a political reporter covering national politics in the Washington bureau at The Union Leader.
In early 2009, an article conceived by Atkinson caused an uproar across New England when he wrote about firefighter Richard Busa's desire to paint the American flag on his helmet. Atkinson broke the story, which was picked up by The Boston Globe, FOXNews, CNN and the Associated Press. The story led to frank discussions about appropriate ways to express one's patriotism while on the job.
In December of 2008, Atkinson was unanimously elected President of the Daily Free Press Alumni Association, a nonprofit corporation in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
After covering the later years of John Silber at Boston University, Atkinson is often quoted in publications to discuss John Silber's long tenure as the chancellor of Boston University. In 2002, Atkinson told the Chronicle of Higher Education that "A lot of people don't even know what he looks like."
Atkinson was born in Rochester, New York in 1982, but it wasn't until he arrived at Boston University that he found his true calling. Enrolling in BU's College of Communication, he took a job as an assignment editor at The Daily Free Press. From there, Atkinson climbed through the ranks, eventually holding the position of editor.
Under Atkinson's reign, the Free Press voted to cut stipends to editorial board members. Atkinson vocally protested the decision, but was outvoted by other board members. He did, however, succeed in running a story about sorority bids doubling. The story came out the same day as a Boston Globe story about an alleged assault involving BU students.
Atkinson has been an analyst for WHDH-TV, Boston's NBC affiliate.
He has also covered the divorce of Kerry Kennedy and Andrew Cuomo for the New York Post.
Personal
Atkinson lives in Somerville, Massachusetts. He enjoys The Simpsons and his primary mode of transportation was the bicycle. Sadly, Atkinson's bicycle was stolen from the porch of his Somerville home last year.
