Dalmore bone

The Dalmore bone or Dalmore bone bead is a square sectioned bone fragment with a perforated hollow through the middle and zig-zag markings that meet on one edge.
It was found in a deposit with Beaker material during archaeological excavations at Dalmore beach in the Hebrides, 12km north of Callanish in the autumn of 1982 by Gerald and Margaret Ponting. It is marked on its faces with a regular zig-zag pattern with the points meeting at one edge and the Pontings suggested it might have form part of a prehistoric measuring rod. Markings on the bone were measured photometrically by Dr. P. J. Scott and analysed by Margaret Ponting who suggested the artefact gives tangible evidence of the Megalithic Yard In total, the bone measures 34mm and is suggested to date to the Bronze Age.
