Dallas Stars Ice Girls

The Dallas Stars Ice Girls (DSIG) are a group of selective women that clean the ice and dance for the Dallas Stars of the National Hockey League. They were one of the first few teams to have ice girls when they started in 2002. This followed Carolina in 1999 who created the first "Spirit Squad" in the NHL (known as the Storm Squad) and the New York Islanders when they created the NHL's first "ice girls" in 2000.
History
As Cheerleaders in Hockey became a thing in the late 90s, Dallas pounced on the opportunity and created the ice girls. The girls are now known for their skating and dancing abilities. However, this was not always the case. It wasn't until 2006 that the Ice Girls started dancing.
Hundreds of women try out each year in hopes of being one of the lucky 2 dozen chosen for the squad. The original team in 2002 consisted of 10 skaters that later evolved to a larger group of women with varying on- and off-ice talents.
A 2008 Lake Day video of the Dallas Stars Ice Girls brought national attention with 1 million views placing the Stars Ice Girls in a national level. Now, many teams in the league have Ice girls of some sort including the Boston Bruins, Los Angeles Kings, Chicago Blackhawks, St. Louis Blues, and more.
Community
The Stars Ice Girls are deeply invested in the community who consistently volunteer and make appearances at local non-profit organizations. Former Ice Girls state that the most rewarding appearances are the visits to nursing homes, schools, and hospitals. Bringing a smile to other people's faces builds up these young ladies and makes them proud of what they do as mentors and role models in the community.
Outside of being an Ice girl, many women making up the squad are mothers, teachers, business women, and even full-time college students.
Tryouts
Tryouts for the Dallas Stars Ice Girls are hosted annually prior to each NHL season where hundreds of women tryout. To audition, it is not required to know how to skate and dance as you are only judged on the stuff you can do. To be an Ice Girl, it helps to have background knowledge of the game of hockey, the rules, the Dallas Stars, Ice Girls History as well as general hockey knowledge. Ladies are suggested to bring warm-up pants, snacks, and a jacket in addition to the general audition attire. The judges also don't want you to compare yourself to others and show your true self to the judges and have the most fun you can.
