Liberty City, Liberty State... America's Worst Place Liberty City, "the Gateway to Freedom" is home to millions of Europeans who had entered the city years ago, probably accounting for many of the criminals in its population. Liberty City was believed to have been bought off from Native Americans to Belgian Settlers for $37, a barrel of meat, and a sack of feathers in the year of 1603; in 1783 it came under the control of the English; but it is suggested that the city had been founded in 1798. Liberty City originally was the first capitol of the United States. When the telephone was invented, Liberty City was only a church, a pasture, and three houses. Liberty City, Liberty State has a neighbouring state called New Guernsey, and has a "ugly, twin sister" city named Alderney. Liberty City is made up of five island boroughs. In 1997, the city's mayor office spokesman commented on the active crime rate, saying "Liberty City used to be a very violent place, but since we took office, it now has the 47th lowest murder rate of any city on the eastern sea board." In 2001, the population was up to 4 million residents and the crime rate had increased at a very high rate, giving the city the reputation as "the Worst Place in America, Where Dreams are Broken." As of 2008, the population went up to 8 million residents and the crime had lessened due to a major police crackdown on criminal activities. Liberty City has always been a key location for organized crime and street gangs: the Liberty City Mafia, the Russian Mafia, the Yakuza, black gangs, and Hispanic gangs. ---- Controlling Crime Operations - 1970s to 2001 The Forelli crime family The Leone crime family The Sindacco crime family The Vercotti crime family The Sonetti crime family ---- Controlling Crime Operations - 2001 to 2008 The Gambetti crime family The Messina crime family The Lupisella crime family The Ancelotti crime family The Pavano crime family The Russian Mafia ---- Drug Trade - 1980s to 2001 The Columbian Cartel North Holland Hustlers The Yakuza The Southside Hoods The Jamaican Yardies ---- Drug Trade - 2001 to 2008 North Holland Hustlers The Russian Mafia The Jamaican Hillside Posse Liberty City Mafia The Liberty City mafia has been around for a very long time, with many different crime families emerging for power in Liberty City, Liberty State. From the 1970s up to 2001, Liberty City was controlled by three major crime families; the Forelli family, the Leone family, and the Sidacco family. By 2001, the three major mafia families of LC had completely wiped out each other. Years later the Liberty City Police Department had made a major crackdown on crime within the city, so five leading mafia organizations, each controlling one of the five boroughs of LC, had created the Commission; the Gambetti family, the Messina family, the Lupisella family, the Ancoletti family, and the Pavano family. The Commission was to organize the five families, to avoid unwanted police attention. The Forelli crime family - 1970s to 2001 Known for their illegal activities in racketeering, gambling, unions, corruption, prostitution, narcotics, and loan sharking. They have been the most powerful mafia family in Liberty City during the 1980s. After Sonny Forelli's death in 1986, the Forelli family had weakened considerably. The deaths of too many high rankings members led to their demise, leaving the Forelli family very little after the two mob wars of 1998. As of 1998, a movie was released based on Sonny Forelli's life . By 2001, all of the remaining Forelli Brothers were murdered as a result to their defeat against the Leone family. His origins go back to Palermo, Sicily. In the 1990s, the Leone family became the top mafia family in Liberty City, and remained to stay that way till 2001. In April 2001, Salvatore went on trial for tax evasion, which he was later found not guilty. A movie called Badfellas was released the same year with Salvatore's face on the cover. After having wiped out all of the major mafia families in Liberty City as of that time, Don Salvatore was assassinated. As of this time, Seragliano is at constant war with the Sonetti crime family. It is believed that Robert Seragliano successively leads the Vercotti family to victory against the Sonetti family in 1997; and some even believe Don Sonetti was killed when a bomb had gone off in a building he had been currently in. Not much is known about Sonetti or his crime family, however; it is believed that Sonetti operates as at least a major crime family in Liberty City by 1997. The Sonetti family looses their fight for Liberty City against the Vercotti crime family, and it is thought that Sonetti himself was killed in a bombing. "Bald Man" Sonetti 1997 Boss Seymour Reamer 1997 Associate Cabot 1997 Associate The Sindacco crime family - 1992 to 1998 The Sindacco crime family is mosty noted for their expansion into Las Venturas, San Andreas; where in 1992 they owned an illegal casino chip counterfeiting operation and had invested largely into Caligula's Palace Casino. After Johnny Sindacco had died of natural causes at a young age in 1995, the Sindaccos successfully obtained complete control of Caligula's Palace Casino, rivaling against the other two Liberty City mafia families. In 1998, Don Paulie Sindacco was killed by capo Toni Cipriani of the Leone family; the Sidaccos ceased to exist by 2001. They are not one of the major five mafia families of Liberty City; they are located in Alderney City, but they have branched out into Liberty City, Alqonquin. The Pegorino crime family is controlled by Jimmy "The Peg" Pegorino. It can be assumed the Pegorino family got their seat in the Commission in 2008, but Jimmy doesn't remain there very long since he is murdered. The Russian Mafia have been very influential in Liberty City, Liberty State by 2008; perhaps more powerful than the Italian mafia in LC, but unlikely. The Russian Mafia presides in Broker of Liberty City, and in 2008 is split two ways; the Petrovic crime family and the Faustin crime family. The Russians were present in the state of San Andreas in 1995, associating with various street gangs, like the Ballas and the San Fierro Rifa; maybe operating the drug trade. In 2013, the Russian Mafia is still a major crime family; still into narcotics, contract killings, and illegal weapons trade. They have been at least around in LC since 1991, and were still active in 2013. The Yakuza may have been a major crime family in Liberty City, but that is not to say they are on top in the criminal underworld. The Japanese Mafia was somewhat responsible for Don Salvatore Leone's death in 2001, having ordered their associate Claude to do the killing. The black gangs from 1998 to 2001 are much weaker than most of the other gangs in Liberty City. There have always been black gangs in Liberty City, from African American street gangs to Jamaican street gangs, from the Southside Hoods to the North Holland Hustlers, from the Uptown Yardies to the Jamaican Hillside Posse. As of 2008, the North Holland Hustlers seems to be the largest black street gang in Liberty City. The Southside Hoods - 1998 to 2001 This street gang is really two gangs, both taking the name the Southside Hoods; but one gang is the Red Jacks representing themselves with red, the other is the Purple Niners repersenting themselves with purple. The Red Jacks and Purple Niners are peaceful with one another, until 2001; when the Red Jacks completely took out the Purple Niners. The Red Jacks were led by a gangster named D-Ice. D-Ice 2001 Red Jack Boss D-Ice Brother 2001 Red Jack Member The Uptown Yardies - 1998 to 2001 The Yardies have been led by King Courtney since 1998, and had even helped the Leone crime family against the other mafia families as extra muscle for a short time. They are Jamaican, seem to be ex-military, and are pretty powerful for a street gang. They have affiliated with capo Toni Cipriani of the Leone family, and had affiliated with street gangster Claude. It is unknown of what has happened to the Yardies after 2001. King Courtney 2001 Boss Queen Lizzy 2001 Member Busta Moves 2001 Member Rudyard 2001 Member North Holland Hustlers - 1980s to 2008 This is a very large African American street gang operating in the drug trade, mainly crack cocaine. Their original leader is Dwayne Forge, a kingpin who had been locked up in prison since 1993. After Dwayne had been put in prison, his friend Trey Stewart became the current head of the North Holland Hustlers. The street gang operates in Algonquin, and they control a nice flow of narcotics. In 2008, the year of Dwayne's release; Trey, now calling himself Playboy X, has problems operating business with his former boss. It could be said that Playboy X was murdered under the orders of Dwayne in 2008, however; Dwayne could have been killed under the orders of Playboy X. It is Niko Bellic, a hitman, who makes the call. The crew is headed by Clarence Little, and possibly is linked to the North Holland Hustlers, which is headed by Playboy X or Dwayne Forge. Niko Bellic is sent to murder Clarence Little, but it is possible that Niko spares Clarence's life. Despite not killing Clarence Little, Clarence is shot and killed when attempting to get revenge against Niko. It is Niko Bellic who kills Clarence Little. Clarence Little 2008 Boss The M.O.B. - ? to 2008 The Money Over Bitches is a large African American street gang and is like most other street gangs in 2008. Jermaine Andrews 2008 Associate The Hillside Posse AKA the Jamaican Posse - ? to 2008 This Jamaican street gang operates in narcotics and in illegal weapons trade. The Hillside Posse is led by Real Badman in Broker, who also operates his business with his friend, Little Jacob Hughes. Around the year 2001, there was the Jamaican Uptown Yardies who were the first acknowlledged Jamaican street gang in Liberty City, but there is no information suggesting that the Hillside Posse are linked to the Jamaican Yardies.
