Cookie Cutter Series

A cookie cutter series is a series of novels, films or TV shows that shares the same plot or theme. Just like a longer version of mad libs the author replaces character and place names while retaining the same basic plot. in this fasion the author can pump out many titles quickly and therefore maximizes his/her profit.

For example a classic fantasy novel plot "skeleton" pioneered first by J.R.R. Tolkien is as follows:

*Antagonist causes trouble far away from protagonist
*Protagonist forms party of sub characters
*Protagonist travels to Antagonist
*Protagonist avoids lesser antagonists/meets new supporting characters
*Protagonist arrives at Antagonist
*Huge battle is fought
*Some sub characters die.
*Protagonist wins
*END

The author simply changes the protagonist, antagonist, supporting characters, places and side plots but keeps the main plot the same.

Many Redwall books follow this basic outline.

Sometimes the skeleton plot can be so generic a different author can write a part of the series and the difference is hardly noticeable.
