Communist Chinese Olympic Accountability Bill

The Communist Chinese Olympic Accountability Bill is a draft bill introduced by the member of the United States House of Representatives for Michigan Thaddeus McCotter who is affiliated to the Republican Party. The bill was introduced on April 1 2008 to restrict U.S. government officials and employees from attending the August 8 ceremony of the 2008 Summer Olympic Games held in Beijing, People's Republic of China.[http://mccotter.house.gov/HoR/MI11/Newsroom/Press+Releases/2008/Rep+McCotter+-+Stop+Politicians+Taxpayer+Funded+Junkets+to+the+Communist+Olympics.htm]

The bill makes reference to the poor human rights record of the Chinese government in Tibet and its involvement in the Darfur crisis. It prohibits any individual who is an official, whether elected or appointed, or employee of the Federal Government from attending any segment of the opening ceremonies of the Olympics Games. The prohibition does not apply to any member of the United States Olympic Team or persons serving in a support capacity.

U.S. President George W. Bush has the power to veto the bill in the event it is approved by lawmakers
