Colin spent his early career working for Smith Industries now Smiths Group, a large UK manufacturer of medical and avionics instrumentation, where he was responsible for the implementation of a variety of mainframe and mini-computer systems covering manufacturing, distribution, accounting, and payroll. His vision at the time was the recognition that the new breed of personal and desktop computers was capable of offering applications of the same sophistication as the then current mainframe and mini computer solutions with the benefit of greater accessibility and lower cost. At Systems Union, he led the development of SunSystems, the mid-market accounting systems product, from its early inception in the early eighties.

These solutions were implemented in over 60 organisations with in excess of 10,000 users. In 2004, Systems Union (now part of Infor Global Solutions) purchased ncSoft and now offers these products form part of their SunSystems Procurement and Productivity portfolio of products.

In the spring of 2006, Colin left ncSoft to form Aqilla Limited with the purpose of creating a new new generation of web-based accounting software built around Web 2.0 technologies.
