Code Brown

‘Code brown’ is a medical euphemism and a form of scatological humor. It is used by health care personnel to covertly communicate that one of the patients has suffered with fecal incontinence. It refers to the brown colouration of stercobilin, the compound present in human feces that gives it its colour. The phrase also satirises terms such as ‘code red’ which might refer to genuine hospital emergency codes.
