O.S.U. (Office Supply Universe)

The O.S.U., or Office Supply Universe, is a fictional universe created by Cory Darnell. It was brought into being in May 2007, in order to fill time, and provide an artistic filter compensating for the mundane activities of every day white collar life. Due to the perceived characterization of his daily duties & rituals, as well as those surrounding him, being analogous to that of machines or drones, he felt it important to maintain individuality, and artistic expression. Where true, work is work and should not affect ones personal life, it was felt that this was a contradiction, due to the fact that the average working individual spends at minimum a third of their entire day doing such. Where he pleads no contest to the thought pattern that one’s work should mot manifest into their lives. He doesn’t fail to argue what’s commonly seen as quite contrary, where ones life should indeed manifest itself into one’s work.

The OSU was originally mean to encompass a single cubical, and the events of such were to be limited to those geographical confines. However do to the unseen success of his fiction, as well as the ever-increasing population, and popularity, of characters, the universe was expanded to encompass all working spaces everywhere. Though this is a broad statement, it is rarely utilized, and the OSU usually takes place within the confines on a singular office building and/or office floor.

The protagonist in the OSU is “Cliptron,” a comparatively large figurine, made from various paperclips and a staple remover. Cliptron’s original purpose was to serve as the evil emperor of the OSU, though due to his astounding popularity, he was soon changed and became more complex an entity being neither “good” nor “evil.” Other such character in the OSU include (but are not limited to): Dancetron, Chief Clip, Daramatron, Eliatron. There are also various vehicles in the OSU, the most famous of which is the “Office Spaceship.”

The OSU gathers it’s energy or “Office Qi (Ch*ee)” from boredom surrounding the day. Thus, as the day grows longer and work stifles down, the OSU gains power and ability with every moment. This of coarse analogous to the difficulty facing most of the working class with attention spans, staying focused, and a growing culture of seen laziness.

The OSU comes at a time where the ‘Sesame Street’ generation had blossomed into adulthood. Meaning, where as children in this age were highly pushed to use their imagination as an alternative boredom, and the author is citing that as the antecedent action which maintains a perfect correlation between the current setting of constant daydreaming in today’s adults.

The stories within the OSU usually occur in short sequences. Every character present is a representation of their owner, or more appropriately, the human occupant(s) of the cubical and/or office. Where each character can represent a different individual in the office, it is usually a circumstance where all the character represent a single trat of a singular individual, and that trait is greatly exemplified and expanded with the character. There is usually an antecedent action played out in “real life” by humans, and then a current demonstration that is acted out by the characters of the OSU. In other terms, Something will usually happen to a human individual (who usually also plays the narrator) and then in that individuals daydream is played out through the OSU.
