Clare "Andy" Andrea Neilson (September 15, 1944-1982) was the son of Ruth Ellis, who was hanged in London on July 13, 1955 for the murder of an ex-lover. Neilson was 10 years old when his mother died. His father was a married French-Canadian soldier with whom Ellis had had a brief affair when she was 17 years old. Raised mostly by Ellis's sister, Muriel, Neilson was left unstable and disturbed by his mother's lifestyle and execution. The judge at his mother's trial, Sir Cecil Havers, sent money every year for Neilson's upkeep. When Neilson committed suicide in 1982, the senior prosecuting counsel, Christmas Humphreys, paid for his funeral. Early life Neilson was born in a private nursing home in Gilsland, Northumbria. His father was a French-Canadian soldier, known to Ellis's family only as Clare, who was ten years older than Ellis. Andy was left to be raised mostly by Ellis's mother and her sister, Muriel.
