City destroying lasers are a common occurance in many older sci-fi movies, books and culture. Typically a "Mad Scientist" builds a city destroying laser to either envoke revenge on people or to "better them" through their own destruction. City destroying lasers usaually are concentrated beams of light that are extremly powerful, a common technique in creating city destroying lasers is to use a diamond to concentrate said light and then pass it through a lens.
