He also wrote two regular columns for the series and numerous entertainment and feature pieces. While there, he also took advantage of the rapidly changing print-production environment to become proficient with the raft of new computer-based systems, such as Apple Macintosh and Quark Xpress, which started to come online in the early 90s. In 1996 he left Harrogate to work in London as a free-lance senior news sub for titles including The Sunday Independent, The Sunday Business, NME, the Mirror and Express series. At 80,000+ this became, and still is, the highest selling single issue the Big Issue has ever had. At the same time he took the opportunity to interview well-known names from the worlds of sport, music and the environment for the magazine. Many became Big Issue front-page stories. In 2004, after becoming a qualified English teacher, he joined the Daily Sport newspaper as senior news sub where he gained further experience of the cutting-edge editorial processes involved in running a popular daily tabloid. Taking this knowledge, he moved to Dublin, Ireland, in 2007 where he worked was senior news sub for the Irish Daily Star. While he was there, the newspaper enjoyed the highest sales figures in its history. At the same time he undertook InDesign training and gained the PA Advanced National Newspaper Sub-Editor qualification. In 2008 he left to form BackBench Solutions Limited, with Production Director Andy Pacino. In his spare time he renovates his holiday home in France, writes short stories and scripts, paints and sketches - and follows Leeds United.
