Chip Odina is a Nigerian-international fashion designer. Chip Odina, born in London, U.K. began tailoring in his teens. After working in fashion retail and studying economics, Chip enrolled in the London College of Fashion and Central St. Martins, obtaining a diploma in fashion design, art history and photography, then a B.A. (Hons.) in product development for the fashion industry. Upon graduating in 1997, Chip began an internship with Virgin Clothing and Virgin Bride. Encouraged by Sir Richard Branson, Chip applied and received the Prince’s Trust Award and the Jerwood Foundation Fashion Award. In 1999 Chip embarked on a tour to promote his label with the support of PriceWaterhouseCoopers covering Switzerland, Amsterdam, Paris, Germany and Australasia. In late 2000 Chip settled in Sydney, Australia featuring at Mercedes Australian Fashion Week twice (2000/2001 aw & 2002/2003 ss). In 2001 the Chip Odina Denim shop was opened in Sydney. After two years, Chip returned to London; re-launched Chip Odina - Tailored Denim and opened a concession and an outlet. Being an independent denim wear designer, Chip Odina has always pushed the boundaries of the orthodox. While designing for various outlets, he also worked on film projects and music videos, plying his tailoring skills whatever the medium. In 2008, Channel 4 UK commissioned award-winning director Rani Khanni to produce a short film on an influential Creative. The piece called ‘Designer and Muse’ features Chip Odina as the subject. Ever fascinated by denim; Chip sought new frontiers by coming to Nigeria to research the countries’ contribution to the history of Denim as we know it. In 2011, Chip Odina was appointed Creative Director of Nigeria Fashion Week (entrusted with nurturing and promoting fashion design and manufacturing talent to an international market with the aim of it contributing to Nigeria’s GDP).
