Child Awareness Month is an organization with the stated goal of protecting children from online predator activity in the United States of America. The organization spreads the message of protecting underage victims by organizing annual events every June. The organization was founded in 1972 by the membership of the Concerned Citizens of Seattle. Originally Child Awareness Month was not specifically targeting only online offenders, but has since modified its goal due to the widespread adoption of the internet as a tool for predatory activity. Since that time, it has grown to include over 800 members in 22 states. Children's Awareness Month focuses on increasing awareness of the vulnerability of children to violence through the internet. The message is spread through the frequent display of the "BALCH" image and accompanying well known question, "Is your child safe online?" Origin of Terms The default image associated with the "Child Awareness Month" Program is commonly called the "BALCH". BALCH is an acronym derived from the Bay Area Legal Child Haven project from which it was first distributed. It is not associated with an individual or other entity as commonly believed by the media.
