Chess.com

Chess.com is a free-to-play online chess site. Chess.com allows numerous types of chess games including correspondence chess, live chess, Chess960 etc. It also regularly hosts live and correspondence chess tournaments and provides several chess learning and training tools.
History
Chess.com was originally owned by Aficionado, Inc., the makers of the software Chess Mentor. It later changed hands and was re-launched in May 2007 by its founders. Currently there are 20 staff members along with other volunteer editors and authors who write several chess articles for the site.
Business model and memberships
Chess.com employs a freemium business model.
While most of Chess.com's features are available for free, certain extra features such as the Tactics Trainer (unlimited use) and Chess Mentor require a subscription-based Premium Membership.
There are three levels of membership.
Development
The site was developed using various open source tools and frameworks such as Prototype JavaScript Framework, TinyMCE and Qcodo. Funding for projects and the development of the site comes from advertisements and paid memberships.
Forums
In addition to being able to play and study chess, chess.com also offers various public forums (message boards) for its members to discuss topics.
