The book is a romantic thriller and takes place during the 1930s in and around the Chicago area. It combines historical events, such as the pursuit of Al Capone and blends fictional characters and events with people who actually lived during the era. Plot Summary The prelude and epilogue are written in the third person from the perspective of Eliot Ness. The rest of the book is written in first person from the viewpoint of the female protagonist in which she reveals she is terrified of Ness. She begins to tell a story about the impact he had on her life during the 1930s. The figure of Al Capone is a minor character as the female protagonist recalls her days at the Lexington Hotel with her boyfriend, a Persian gangster named Hassan Adeeni. Other figures who are brought into the book of note are Alla Nazimova and F. Scott Fitzgerald although they figure briefly in the book. Frank Nitti is mentioned in the book as well and the end of the book reveals the true nature of a deal made between Nitti and the male protagonist that involved Ness. The book continues throughout the 1930s in which the Ness figure becomes the male protagonist in the second half of the book, at which time he refers to trying to catch the Cleveland Torso Murderer . It ends on December 6, 1941, just before the Pearl Harbor attack.
