Charlie Wittmack

Biography


Charlie is the first Iowan to climb Mount Everest. He is a notable adventurer and avid mountain climber, having scaled peaks on five continents, including Mount Everest in 2003. He has led expeditions to Canada, Alaska, South America, Mexico, Europe and Africa. His expeditions include Denali, Aconcagua, Orizaba, Iztacihuattel, the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc, Mount Rainier, , and other 14,000 ft peaks around the world. He is an experienced rock climber, having climbed extensively in the United States, including spending several months on the big walls of Yosemite Valley.

Charlie is an attorney with Davis, Brown, Koehn, Shors & Roberts. In 2006, he graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law with distinction. During his tenure at the University of Iowa, Charlie interned with the Hon. Robert W. Pratt in the Federal District Court, Southern District of Iowa, and represented his class as a delegate to the Iowa Student Bar Association. Prior to law school matriculation, he worked as a litigation legal assistant for Arnold & Porter in Washington, D.C. Charlie also holds a B.B.A. from the Henry B. Tippie College of Business at the University of Iowa.

In his free time, Charlie operates a motivational program for students across Iowa. This innovative educational program challenges students to reach for their dreams, giving them tools to help them make positive life choices. His work has been widely recognized across the state with awards including: the Iowa Executive Proclamation, awarded by Governor Tom Vilsack; Iowa Senate Resolution 45, on motion from Senator Mary Kramer; the Key to the City of Des Moines, awarded by Mayor Preston Daniels; the Key to the City of Nevada; and an honorary membership in the Kiwanis club.

He lives with his family in Des Moines Iowa. He is the grandson of former Iowa Governor Norman A. Erbe.

Charlie is currently training to be the first American to accomplish the "Peak and Pond" Adventure, to summit and swim both Mount Everest and English Channel, respectively. He has already climbed Everest and is training to swim the Channel in Summer 2008.
