CDS Records is an independent record label specializing in Soul Blues, Southern Soul, R&B & Blues music. From late 2007 through 2012 the label along with it's affiliated labels (Aviara Music, Benevolent Blues, Special Soul, Hot Spot Records, Ocean Beach Records, CDS Gospel) have released over 80 full albums, including compilations.
History
CDS Records LLC was originally formed in Carlsbad, CA in 2007, but relocated to Medina, OH in 2011. Label owner Dylann DeAnna started the imprint after his former website "Blues Critic" had garnered heavy traffic and interest from the Blues & modern day Southern Soul aka the Soul Blues industry. In 2005 Blues Critic had begun as an online magazine featuring CD reviews on major and independent Blues & Soul blues artist releases, artist interviews, a monthly Top 40 Southern Soul, Rhythm & Blues Albums Chart and hosting it's annual Blues Critic Awards Readers Poll. The website grew to become a CD store selling only Southern Soul and Blues titles and added two Internet radio stations (one for Contemporary Blues and one for Southern Soul).
Once DeAnna started his record label Blues Critic dropped the CD reviews and interviews. The website's name was changed to Soul Blues Music, which is primarily a CD store, but also still hosts Internet Radio and is recognized as providing the genre's official albums chart (published monthly)
CDS Records joined other labels like Malaco, Mardi Gras and Ecko in producing strictly "Soul Blues" music and it's twin "Southern Soul", a term denoting independent "Soul" & "Blues" music popular in the U.S. chitlin' circuit.
The label output was heavy from the start, releasing 11 albums on artists like Charles Wilson, Lee Shot Williams, Nellie Tiger Travis, Chick Willis, Barbara Carr and Stan Mosley. By it's second year the label created two sister labels ("Aviara Music" & "Benevolent Blues") and the three labels released another 18 albums over the next 12 months and 23 the year after that. Other notable artists added were Cicero Blake, Stephanie Pickett, Carl Marshall, Mister Zay, Chuck Roberson, Carl Sims, Gregg A. Smith, Uvee Hayes, Will Easley, Jody Sticker and T.J. Hooker-Taylor, Floyd Taylor (sons of the late, great Johnnie Taylor). Beginning in late 2008 most of the projects were written and recorded by producer/songwriter Carl Marshall, who became the label's Vice President.
CDS Records became the exclusive distributor of another small label, Hot Spot Records, and created another new label entitled Special Soul Music. Special Soul Music released a comeback record on classic Soul singer Garland Green in 2012 (his first in 27 years) and former member of The Chi-Lites, Anthony Watson
