Cayetano Escudero Sanz

Cayetano Escudero Sanz founded San Ildefonso in Culebra and created the first settlement in 1880. The coat of arms of Culebra is that of the Escudero families, the snake on it represents Culebra meaning serpent or snake in Spanish and the crown representing the inhabitants sent to Culebra, before Sanz came, to protect it. Born in northern Spain, he emigrated to Puerto Rico as an adult and served as Vieques's delegate to Culebra from 1880 to 1891.
Biography
During 1880, a group of Puerto Rican settlers under the leadership of Cayetano Escudero Sanz colonized the island of Culebra for the first time.
