Carson Butler, Jr. (born August 21, 1987) is a former American football tight end. He was signed by the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2009. He played college football at Michigan. Butler has also been a practice squad member of the Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers, Cincinnati Bengals, New York Giants, Tennessee Titans, and New England Patriots. Early years Butler attended Renaissance High School in Detroit, Michigan, where he was a two-year letterwinner in football, playing tight end, running back, and outside linebacker. College career After high school, Butler attended the University of Michigan, where he saw playing time as a true freshman in 2006. He played tight end for two more seasons, switching to defensive end during the 2008 season. He finished his three-year career with 41 receptions for 429 yards and three touchdowns, as well as three tackles on defense in 29 games played. Professional career After going undrafted in the 2009 NFL Draft as an early entrant, Butler signed with the Green Bay Packers as an undrafted free agent. He was waived on July 22, 2009. Butler was thereafter signed by the Detroit Lions on August 6, 2009, but waived during final cuts on September 5 and re-signed to the practice squad, where he remained until his release on September 29. Butler was next signed to the practice squad of the San Francisco 49ers on October 28, 2009, only to be released on November 3. Butler was then signed to the practice squad of the Cincinnati Bengals on December 30, 2009. He was waived on January 18, 2010. He was then signed a reserve/future contract on January 19, 2010. He was waived on June 21, 2010. Butler signed with the New England Patriots on August 2, 2010, but waived on September 3, 2010. He was next signed to the Tennessee Titans' practice squad on September 7, 2010, but released on September 15, 2010. The Patriots signed Butler to their practice squad on September 21, 2010. He was re-signed to a future contract for the 2011 season on January 18, 2011, but waived on September 2 and then re-signed to the practice squad on January 26, 2012.
