Carlos M. Gonzalez

Carlos M. Gonzalez is an American Democratic Party politician, and a Council Member-At-Large of Newark, New Jersey, though all nine council members of Newark are elected on a nonpartisan basis at the regular municipal election or at the general election for terms of four years. He was sworn into office on July 1, 2006. He was born in the town of Cayey, in the Freely Associated State of Puerto Rico in 1949 and is one of ten children to humble parents who where sugarcane field workers. He is married to Margarita Muñiz,and a father of two children.

After finishing his primary and secondary studies, Gonzalez went on to attend the University of Puerto Rico and graduated in 1969. He went on to gain ten years of experience in the area of public accounting as an auditor with two international accounting firms. In Arizona, while pursuing his master's degree, Gonzalez became a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), he graduated from the International Institute of the Americas in 1979.

After living in Arizona for awhile, Gonzalez moved to Newark. With self-determination and surprising aspiration, he used his savings to become a full-time law student. In 1992, he earned a Juris Doctor from Rutgers University and went on to work with a Wall Street law firm that specialized in public finance (municipal bonds). In 1996 he was finally able to opened a law office in Newark.

Gonzalez currently serves on the Board of Trustees at Essex County College. He is an associate of many professional organizations, among which include: the American Immigration Lawyers Association or (AILA), the New York Bar Association, and the Hispanic Bar Association. Gonzalez also participates as an active member in the Concerned Hispanics In Search of Progress and Advancement or CHISPA, and the Criollos Athletic Club.
