Capital Gardens

Capital Gardens is London’s largest group of garden centres and was formed in 1990 with roots going back to 1982 when a landscape partnership was formed. There are now six garden centres, an award winning Landscaping company, Capital Garden Landscapes, and a comprehensive online shop.
Three garden centres are located in North London at Highgate Village, Alexandra Palace and Temple Fortune, with two in South London at Morden Hall Park and Neal’s Nurseries in Wandsworth and we are also located in Hertfordshire with Wood’s of Berkhamsted. Capital Garden Landscapes is run from Highgate with an office in Wandsworth and its website operates from The Royal Arsenal Estate in South East London.
History
The original landscape company was formed by Colin Campbell-Preston and Rosemary Campbell-Preston in South West London. After moving their landscaping business to Southwood Nurseries in Highgate they slowly bought parts of the historic site until ultimately buying the nurseries themselves, forming Capital Gardens.
Capital Gardens rapidly expanded throughout the 1990's, adding sites at Alexandra Palace, Morden in Morden Hall Park, Temple Fortune in Fincley and Wood’s of Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. After a failed attempt at a public listing as a PLC circa 1995, one garden centre, Neal’s Nurseries in Wandsworth, was added to the portfolio in the early 2000's.
The company was one of the first in the UK to attempt online garden retail, launching a transactional website in 1999.
In recent years Capital Gardens has suffered along with the rest of the economy and they are now actively downsizing the business. The landscaping departments at Highgate and Wandsworth were closed during 2010 and their only freehold site, Highgate, is currently the subject of a contested planning application for a housing development.
